Summer Reading Program for Rising 5th Graders

In your soon-to-arrive report card envelopes you will find a letter to Rising Fifth Grade Parents and Students about this summer's reading program. It will provide you with all the details you will need to complete your summer reading assignment. In a nutshell, each student is required to read two books from a listed of provided choices. Each student must also complete an index card for each of the books and bring the card to school by the second week of school. A full explanation of what to put on the index cards is included in the letter that will accompany report cards. Happy Reading!!

Author Study

Author Study Author Study Worm

We're doing an author study in class of Patricia Polacco. She has written and illustrated many children's books and won several awards for her work. While many of her books are written for young children, they deal with mature and very real subject matters such as the Civil War, bullying, and dyslexia. The majority of her children's stories are also based on facts about Patricia's life experiences. The fact that she's a writer and illustrator who creates stories based on her life that we can connect with makes her an inspiring and interesting author to study. Click on the link below to learn more about Patricia's life, her work, and to find activities, posters, bookmarks, postcards, and more related to Patricia's books.

This Week's Highlights (5/4/09)

A comment about last week first - Students received typed feedback based on their performance as Leader during their Book Club work this year. Please ask your child about this if they haven't already shared it with you. Every student should be proud of the work they did this year during Book Club. They read, made connections, led discussions, made inferences based on foreshadowing clues, summarized, discussed illustrations, and evaluated leaders. It was a lot of work and they rose to the occasion.

Okay, now for this week and some dates in the weeks to follow....

Monday morning, local teen author Michelle Izmaylov will visit Mt. Bethel and speak to all of the fourth graders! Our class came up with a bunch of interview questions that will be asked of Michelle by our own, Danya.

Since we're now into our last month of school (can you believe it?), I asked students to submit their top three choices of who they'd like to with with at their continent. I'll do my best to make everyone happy with their seat. As long as everyone continues their good behavior, we'll leave the seats that way until the year's over.

Tuesday is our field trip to Dahlonega!!  Please be sure to read the detailed information students brought home last Thursday. It's important that everyone bring their own snacks, drink (and lunch drink) for the trip. IMPORTANT: Since it will be so late, students will NOT be allowed to go to our classroom when they return from the field trip. Anything they might need from school (backpacks, books, etc.) should be taken home on Monday. And, most importantly, don't be late to school on Tuesday morning!!

This week's tests include:

Thursday - Social Studies test on the Louisiana Purchase

Friday - Spelling test, Vocabulary test, and Social Studies test on the War of 1812

Some dates to put on your calendar as we look ahead to the end of the year are:

Friday, May 8th, all Media Center books are due back.

Monday, May 18th, there will be a Reader's Theater performance by some of our own Mt. Bethel teachers!

Tuesday, May 19th, is Field Day! Fourth grade starts at 11:30.

Wednesday, May 20th, fourth grade students will participate in End of the Year Rotations where they'll rotate to four different fourth grade classrooms to participate in various fun activities. This will occur from 9:15 to 11:15 that day.

Thursday, May 21st, will be the last day for students to bring all of their things home from school. On Friday, May 22nd, students should not bring any backpacks, books, etc. to school.

Friday, May 22nd, will be our end-of-the-year party! It'll be from 12:30 to 1:30 in the outdoor classroom. At 1:30, we'll quickly come in to get ready for the 5th grade walk of honor. Whew, it's hard to believe the school year is coming to an end!

Recycleff Our class has been doing a terrific job of recycling plastic water bottles this year! We have recently been told, however, that the collectors will no longer be taking plastic bottles. Sooo, we won't have a place to recycle them here. Please support our green efforts, if possible, by sending your child in with a reuseable water bottle.

Reminder note We are having a vocabulary test tomorrow. It'll be in the afternoon.
