Today’s
meeting included a number of non-profit organizations, churches, Cobb Emergency
Operations, Cobb Disaster Recovery, American Red Cross, United Way, and the
like. There are many organizations who are here to fulfill the emergent
need for those families who have been displaced. We have another meeting
next week to continue planning efforts to ensure the communities that have
suffered will begin the long term effort of recovery. While there is a
“method to the madness” and lots things going on behind the scenes with all of
these organizations, PTA has been asked to help with the immediate needs of the
families who are flood victims.
Therefore, The 9th District PTA will be collecting gift cards at our Fall
Conference next Thursday, October 1 st at Kennesaw Mountain High School.
We have been asked to donate only WalMart or Target gift
cards at this time so the families can purchase clothes, supplies, food, and
personal hygiene items. The gift cards should range between $5.00 -
$25.00 each. You are encouraged to share this information with all
of your schools and to collect gift cards from your PTA members. At the
end of the District meeting, the gift cards will be given to the Center for
Family Resources for their staff to distribute among the families who qualify
for assistance. The Center for Family Resource is one of many
non-profit organizations that are heavily involved in the planning and
organization of the disaster and recovery efforts. One of their
representatives is planning on attending our District Fall Conference next week
to catch everyone up on the current situation.
We believe that we will have a “wish list” of items needed in the near future.
As soon as those details are distributed to us we will forward on to our
PTA leaders. Until these families have an opportunity to get back in
their homes, assess damage, and determine what their losses are, it’s difficult
to collect food or specific items.
Also, please
be aware that all CCSD schools are collecting school supplies and teacher
supplies. The Cobb County school system will pick these items up from
the schools and house at the County’s warehouse to distribute to students and
teachers from Clarkdale Elementary and others
who need them.
Thank you so much to all of you for your kindness and support to those who have
suffered such devastation. We appreciate all that you do for your
schools and community.
