April Cultural Arts News

If_you_give_a_mouse_a_cookie_2 On April 18th Mt. Bethel students K-2 were treated to the Theatreworks USA hour-long production of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Other Story Books (Amazing Grace, Borreguita and the Coyote, Imogene's Antlers, Martha Speaks, Master Man, Math Curse, Owen).

Lessons learned: Borreguita and the Coyote teaches children how a clever little lamb can outwit a big, bad predator . . . and it throws in a little Spanish too. Owen, about a boy who refuses to give up, demonstrates a clever solution. Amazing Grace, about a girl who wants to try out for the role of Peter Pan in a school production (although, as classmates tell her, Peter was neither female nor black), is an ode to pursuing your dream.

March Cultural Arts News

Eric_litwin The Cultural Arts Program had wonderful performers this past month!  A great storyteller, Eric Litwin, came out and had the kids in suspense the entire time.  Many of you inquired about him, and he offers a CD of his work, if anyone is interested, atGlass_harp_2 www.ericlitwin.com!

We also had fascinating musician, Brien Engel, who played a glass harp, which he constructed out of a variety of glasses, and showed the many ways we can make music out of household items!  Click here to view a great article about him done by the PBS station.

It's Butterfly Time!

Painted_lady On April 18 the PTA Science Enrichment Committee will deliver jars of caterpillars to more than 30 teachers throughout the school, as well as butterfly cottages to teachers who do not already have habitats from previous years. About three weeks later, all of these caterpillars will become beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. After the butterflies spend a week or so in their classroom cottages eating sugar water and fruit, the classes will release them outside so that they can lay eggs and continue their life cycle.

To learn more about the butterflies, contact Nancy Brener, Science Enrichment Chair.

Parent Protection Act: HB 901

Bill There are several tax proposals out there, but one bill has been the focus of PTA input for two years!

Under the Parent Protection Act, employers must allow employees to take unpaid leave, up to 24 hours annually, without fear of retaliation to respond to an invitation from the school for a conference or for medical appointments for themselves, their children, or their close relatives. Schools and day care centers must provide 3 days notice of such conferences.

NOTE:  HB 901 was heard in committee on February 7th and assigned to a subcommittee for further hearings!   Karen Hallacy, Georgia PTA Legislative Chair, spoke for the bill.

February Cultural Arts News

Dr_dolittle On Tuesday, February 5th, students in grades 3-5 enjoyed the Theatreworks USA production of Dr. Dolittle, an enchanting musical about communication and the power of storytelling.

Inspired by the classic book, author (and World War I captain) Hugh Lofting reaches out to his son during wartime by writing a fantastical story about a kind-hearted doctor who can talk to the animals.  When Doctor John Dolittle learns that a mysterious disease is afflicting the monkeys of Africa, he sets off on a musical adventure to come to the animals’ aid.

Calling all Authors

Challenger_publishing Challenger Publishing is in full swing and invites Mt. Bethel students (K-5) to publish their very own book!

After submitting your manuscript and working with an editor, you'll have a bound, illustrated, typed book when you are done.  Your story will also be published in a Mt. Bethel Anthology, which will be available in the Media Center and classrooms for all to enjoy.

Buccaneer Blast Bummer

Bummer We have recently been informed by the YMCA that they will no longer be sponsoring elementary school sports parties; therefore, Mt Bethel will not be having its skating events for the remainder of the year.

Hopefully, through some brainstorming, our committees will come up with another event for the kids to get together and have some fun!  Thank you so much for your support!

Mrs. Bain - Edutopia Magazine: Green School Teacher of the Year!

Missy_bainA teacher's passion for the environment inspires not only her students but also their parents and the entire school.

Driving past Mount Bethel Elementary School, along Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta, Georgia, you may notice the sign that reads "Cobb County Green School." This designation coincides -- not coincidentally -- with the recognition of second-grade teacher Melissa "Missy" Bain as Cobb County's Green School Teacher of the Year, 2007.

Bringing an environmental awareness to her class and to the school as a whole, Bain has used what her principal, Robin Lattizori, calls her "energy-plus enthusiasm" to help the school achieve its environmental Silver Status...

Edutopia_3 Click here to read more of this article from the October 2007 issue of Edutopia Magazine.

Congratulations Mrs. Bain!  Thank you for inspiring our children!

Mt. Bethel PTA is offering Green Team bottles at manufacturer's cost ($2.50 each!) to promote recycling and reduce the number of plastic bottles in our trash cans.  At this price, you can have several on hand and eliminate the need to purchase disposable bottles.

Please consider purchasing a Green Team bottle...or use a sports bottle of your own to minimize waste.

Remember - if every child and staff member brings a disposable bottle each day, we throw out more than 1,000 bottles each day and 20,000 bottles each month!
