But, all was not lost. Instead, people helped others and communities banded together to begin the recovery process. The school district asked other schools to welcome the students of Clarkdale Elementary and, in just two days, the students were back in school and welcomed with open arms by their Austell Intermediate and Compton Elementary school families. Supply drives brought huge quantities of notebooks, pencils, backpacks, and books to the teachers and students in need. Mt. Bethel Elementary, along with other schools and religious organizations, held food, clothing, and household good drives; supermarkets and other stores accepted monetary donations for all of the victims of the flood; and the American Red Cross went into action.
All of these hands reaching out to help others exemplifies the human spirit at its finest. Please use this time to talk with your children about the good that came as a result of the devastation. Explain to them that even though their family suffered no harm, there were so many other people that needed help and the community had a responsibility to respond to their needs. Talk to them about citizenship, kindness, and caring. Help them to understand that giving really can be better than receiving.
As Thanksgiving rapidly approaches, take time to be thankful for the good things in your life and for the good people that surround all of us. We are indeed, very lucky.
