What a busy week we have had!  We have had a lot of reviewing as we enter into the last week of the grading period.  On Monday we will have our end of the nine weeks assessment.  We have sent home study guides, please review them in preparation for the test.  A great website for reviewing counting back change is linked below:

Our class holiday party is on Tuesday at 10:45 - 12:00.  Parents are invited to attend.  Thanks to everyone who donated crafty items for the party.

December is here!

We have a very busy month and just about 2 weeks before the Winter Break.  We are currently reviewing elapsed time and counting back money.  In Language Arts, we are working on creating sentence fluency, and in Science we are finishing up our Georgia Habitats unit.

Our students learned how to access the new AR program and Cobb Virtual Library this week.  They can now access the complete list of AR books from home - this is especially helpful in choosing books to read when they are not at school.  The sites can be accessed from anywhere - the public library, home, or even on your Blackberry!  We hope this helps in keeping your child reading now and during the break.  Check it out:  http://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx

Diving into Division

Hello Parents,

We are diving into division with our amazing students!  One of the keys to learning division fluently is understanding and demonstrating the inverse relationship between multiplication and division.  Students need DAILY practice of multiplication facts during this time. Here are some ideas of how to work this in:

Flash Cards  - daily drills with a parent, sibling, or friend

Fastt Math - online practice of drills

Hot Dots - electronic flash cards that the student can use independently to pratice (these are available at Lakeshore Learning and the School Box).

Fact Family Flash Cards (also available at Lakeshore Learning and School Box).

Our Famous American Hero reports are going very well!  Frederick Douglas projects are due tomorrow, and Susan B. Anthony projects are due on Friday.  We will also have a test Friday on Sort 10.

Whew - a fast week!  Thanksgiving will be here before you know it!  Get out and enjoy this beautiful weather while we have it!

Multiplication Mania!

We are officially "full swing" into multiplication.  Our students have learned how to read an array, multiply by grouping sets, multiply by skip counting, and multiply on a number line - there are so many ways to get to an answer!  We have begun "timed tests" to help them demonstrate fluency with their facts - we did 0 and 1's today, 2's are on Thursday and 5's are on Friday.

We will be asking you to support them at home to "cement" these facts.  If you do not have a set of flash cards, please pick up a set (at Walmart, Schoolbox, etc.) and practice with your child when indicated.

TGIF

It has been a great - and rainy - week! 

We have wrapped up the first nine weeks - yes, we made it!  Report cards will be coming home on 10/16.  We are really proud of our students and they are all making great progress. 

Next week we will beginning moving from Science and diving into Social Studies again.  We will be studying Paul Revere.  You can download a study guide here Download Parent Letter...  Please study with your child! 

We are jumping into cursive writing and you will be seeing practice sheets coming home.  Please make sure to have your child continue to do all assignments other than cursive in print/manuscript unless specified.

We will start Sort 6 (Words their Way spelling program) next week and multiplication is underway!  We have taught your child how to read an array, which is a visual representation of numbers aligned in rows and columns that helps them to visualize the concept.  They get it and we are moving into multiplication.

We have had several students out with illness, please keep us both informed when your child is out.  If needed we can send materials home, and we also like to know how they are doing.

It's About Time....

Hello Parents,

We have been studying elapsed time this week and need your help!  Our students are doing a great job with this concept but will benefit GREATLY by using it in "real life" application.   You can play the "Time Game" anywhere - simply ask them questions as you are going about your daily routines:

Driving to an activity:  "Rael, it is 3:30 and it will take us 30 minutes to get to the ball field.  What time will we arrive?"

At home:  "Taylor, the clothes will take 45 minutes to dry.  If it is 4:00, what time will the clothes be ready?"

You can see the applications, please play this game as much as you can.  Start with easier increments - hour, then half hour.  Once your student is confident, move on to 15 minute increments, etc.

Tonight, please visit the Science Fair from 5:30-7:30! We have several entries from our class, and 250 displays schoolwide - WOW!  Come check out the super scientists at Mt.Bethel - you WILL be entertained and learn something too! 

Friday - we will have 2 assessments tomorrow - our Newspaper quiz and Words Their Way Sort 5.  Please review these with your child.

Be on the lookout for a field trip permission slip for our visit from the Chattahoochee Nature Center.  This is a FREE field trip and the students really enjoy this one!

Rock's Rock!

Hello Parents,

We are studying rocks this week in Science.  Today your child is coming home with their Science workbook - please have them do pages 10 and 11 for homework.  We have sent home a study guide on Rocks and Minerals to prepare for our test next Monday.  We have covered most of this material and will be reinforcing it this week.  Please work with your child to support him/her as they learn this materia.  We have also sent the Rock Cycle Song home, sung to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat".  This is a great way for your child to learn about rocks.

Mark your calendar for the Science Fair - it is this Thursday from 5:30pm - 7:30pm -you do not have an entry to attend and we would encourage everyone to come and see the super science at Mount Bethel!

Your youngest child will receive an information packet on the educational enrichment opportunities provided by the MBESF, as well as a personalized donor card in his/her backpack.
