Field Trip Reminder: Next Friday, October 16th we will be going to the Theater in the Square. The students will see The Library Dragon. This is actually a book that was written by Carmen Deedy who has been a speaker at Mount Bethel in years past. Please remember to wear your navy blue Mount Bethel class t-shirt.
Tomorrow is the last day of the 1st 9 weeks grading period! Hooray, we've made it 1/4 through the year. I am looking forward to diving into the 2nd 9 weeks, it has some great curriculum. Here is what you can look forward too in the next 9 weeks...
Science: We will start out the 2nd 9 weeks studying Force and Motion. Attached you will find the parent newsletter for this. I encourage you to have discussions with your students about these topics. They love to find the simple machines around the house! Don't be surprised if they start taking things apart and putting them back together! :) Download Force and Motion Parent Newsletter
Social Studies: I love the 4th grade social studies curriculum. During this 9 weeks we will learn about six fabulous explorers. Stay tuned to find out who!
Language Arts: Tall tales, folktales, and fables here we come! We will be analyzing traditional literature. We will use what we have learned about the strategies good readers use to understand text. We will also be writing reading responses. The students will begin to have reading response journal entries for homework several nights a week. (I have to teach them how to write them first so this will be a few weeks down the road.)
Math: Division beware! We will attack long division this 9 weeks along with geometry. The geometry unit is great and the students will have some cool hands-on projects. Thank you to the parents who have been so patient with our multiplication unit. I know that many of us have learned to multiply the standard/traditional way so the partial products and area models are a very foreign concept!

The October reading log was sent home today in the Thursday folder. It is neon green. Please keep this at home and fill it out throughout the month. The kids know how to do the genre part and the level part. It is due at the end of the month. (I will send a reminder.)

Don't forget the economics quiz tomorrow! The resources are provided below. Just scroll down and you can click and review!
Next week we will pick back up with vocabulary. We will test on Unit 5 on Friday. Please remember to use the vocabulary website www.sadlier-oxford.com to practice.
We will also start our spelling tests next week. The students will be tested on Wednesday of next week. The words are in the Words Their Way workbook. I will choose 15 of the 24 words for Wednesday's test. Our spelling study right now is focusing on identifying open and closed syllables.
Next week we will move into our study of Native American cultures in social studies and our force and motion unit in science. I will be posting study resources on the blog throughout these units. I will also give plenty of notice for these tests. (They won't be for a while.)

Happy Monday to all of you! I hope everyone enjoyed Sunday's beautiful weather; it was such a relief to see the sunshine after all of the rain. I do hope everyone is doing well and your homes are okay after the flooding. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.
This week we will be having an economics quiz on Friday October 2nd.The quiz will be a combination of what we have studied from both the textbook and a few PowerPoints. Below you will see I have posted these PowerPoints and vocabulary list to use as a study tool. On Tuesday I will be sending home a study guide that will need to be completed and brought back to school by Thursday. We will go over the study guide on Thursday and play a review game.
