Jones' Jaguars

Not Your Average 5th Graders!

Dates to Remember

Wed, Dec. 9th - We will be attending the symphony at Cobb Energy Center to hear beautiful classical music.

Fri, Dec. 11th - All our fifth graders will participate in Random Acts of Kindness in their classrooms.

Mon, Dec. 14th - This is Immigration Day. Please discuss your student's trip into the U.S. with them. Their journals will be due on Dec. 17th.  *******  There will be a few projects that are a part of Immigration Day, most of these will be addressed during the regular social studies class. The specific information and documents have been loaded on Mrs. Higginbotham's blog ( Mrs. H's Aces)

Fri, Dec. 18- The holiday party will be that morning and pillow signing will be in the afternoon.

Reading Logs and Math Blasters are due on Dec. 17th (this is  for Nov. and Dec. combined). I know the holidays are busy for everyone. If your student is on the right pacing track I will not be assigning them a blaster or log until after the break. However, feel free to keep reading and doing math for fun.Have a wonderful busy time leading up to our holiday break.

Jaguar Update

The Jaguars completed awesome math projects. Their "Fantastic Fraction Feasts" were well done, from their party planning computations through their actual table presentations. I hope they learned and enjoyed using fractions in everyday situations.

This Friday your student will be doing fun filled learning activities and rotating through all the 5th grade classrooms. This is also "College Spirit Wear Day"- so cheer and represent your fav college.  We are celebrating Thanksgiving on Friday with their favorite food group - desserts. Pie Day will be after lunch, thanks to all the moms who are cooking and serving.  I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving with their family.

The big project coming up for fifth grade is Immigration Day. **There is one change- this will be held on Monday, December 14th. The students' journey will begin, with all their belongings, when they enter school that morning. This should be truly a memorable experience for everyone. Please see the info sheets coming home Thurs., mark your calendar so they can remember what to take for their arrival in America.

We have been working on descriptive writings using the techniques of flashback and foreshadowing. I am so impressed with these young authors and their personal writings. If you get a chance, have them share some of their stories, they are develping beautifully.

Just a reminder, math blaster data and reading logs are due December 17th. There will be no blasters or reading log requirements over the holiday - just read for the pure enjoyment of reading.

If you are taking a road trip over the holidays, please appoint your student the navigator and give them a map. Let them compute travel time, mileage and directions for your trip. You will have your own personal GPS and they will have a memorable learning experience.

Next We Have November !

November News:

We are going to have a visiting student from Kennesaw observing in our classroom for the next month. Amanda Joiner wants to be a teacher and will be helping in our classroom. Miss Joiner will be here until December 4th. She is also in the Ga. Tech band and plays the piccolo. This is not a typo- she is cross registered, so go Rambling Wrecks!

The students will be assigned a book report which is either to be based from an autobiography or biography next week. If you would like to have your student get a head start, they can pick their book now and I will give the students the rubric next Tuesday, Nov. 10th. This correlates with our reading unit about famous people.  We will continue studying parts of speech and reviewing usage.

We are in the midst of studying adding/subtraction of mixed numbers. This is one of the harder units for fifth grade although they are doing beautifully so far. Please feel free to look over your child's work during this unit, they also have math notes in their journals to refresh their memories.

Science Matters!- We are discovering the world of matter around us. The students will be testing many materials and observing physical and chemical changes during this unit. Your student will bring home a "brain drain" scavenger hunt for the periodic table. This is simply to acquaint them with the symbols and elements, do not stress over this one - Just have fun with this one and give it the "Good Old College Try".
