Newsletter: August 30, 2007

Important Reminders and Dates:

1. Labor Day: No School Monday, September 3rd.

2. Mystery Reader: September 7th at 8:00-8:25 is Mr. Moskowitz

3. Please return the Room Mom sheet on Tuesday. Don't forget the Photo Release Form, Receipt of Parent Information Guide Form, and Acceptance Notification Form.

4. Remember we visit the Media Center EVERY THURSDAY!

5. Social Studies Project: Next week we will be discussing families. We will be working on a class project which will require EACH STUDENT TO BRING IN A PHOTO OF EACH FAMILY MEMBER THAT MAY BE CUT!! We suggest bringing in colored copies of family photos. REMEMBER THESE PHOTOS WILL BE CUT AND NOT RETURNED IN ORIGINAL STATE.

6. CLASS PICNIC: Our class will be enjoying a fall picnic on Friday, October 5, 2007 in our outdoor classroom. You may bring a lunch for your child and yourself. Please let me know if your child will be buying lunch from the cafeteria.

We are Learning:

1. Reader's Workshop: We began using our book boxes to store our "just right" books. Also,we responded to how we felt about after reading our "just right" books. Next week we will discuss independent worktime choices.

2. Math Workshop: Addition Math Test will be on Wednesday September 5th. The skills that will be covered are, ways to build 7,8, 9 and 10, vertical addition and order property. We will begin to introduce subtraction concepts.

3. Writer's Workshop:  Along with rituals and routines we are practicing planning and drafting our small moment stories. Next week we will focus on getting our words to look right.

4. Social Studies: We will meet our school helpers and discuss their role in making our school function. Also, we will be discussing families.

5. Phonics: We will continue to explore the many sounds our consonants make. WORD WALL WORDS: HAS, AS, HIS, IS

2. Our Media Center Day is EVERY Thursday. Please make sure your child's book is in his/her bookbag ready to returned.

3. Mystery Reader for AUGUST 31 from 8:00-8:25am is PAT HARPER!

4. MEMORY BAGS: Please send in your child's memory bag into school.

5. Please consult our specials schedule so your wears the correct shoes for P.E. If you need a new schedule, please send in a note. Thank you.

We are Learning...

1. Reader's Workshop: We are exploring our class library and getting ready to learn how to choose a "just right book." Also, we will be learning how to record and respond our books and feelings.

2. Math Workshop: We are continuing to build addition concepts. We will focus on ways to make 7, 8, 9, and 10. We will also discover that addition sentences can be written vertically and horizontally and still equal the sum.

3.Phonics: We will be exploring the many sounds our consonants make in the alphabet. OUR WORD WALL WORDS FOR NEXT WEEK WILL BE: DO, YOU, WAS, WENT, IS.

4. Writer's Workshop: As writers we are brainstorming all of the topics we are able to write about.

5. Social Studies: Social Studies is the study of us! We will begin discussing ourselves and our classroom community.

Miss Homoelle's First Grade

We are Learning...

1. Reader's Workshop: rituals and routines and next week we will be learning how to choose a "just right book!"

2. Math Workshop: We are learning addition concepts and will be working independently and with math buddies as we practice these skills!

3.Writer's Workshop: We will continue to share the very special items in our memory bags. Please remember to send in your child's memory bag. From these memories we will draft "small moment" stories.

4. Morning Meeting: We are practicing giving and receiving compliments. Additionally, we are learning class rules and school procedures.

Important Dates:

1. Picture Day will be WEDNESDAY August 22nd. Please return picture order form and money. Thank you!

2. Labor Day is September 3rd. NO SCHOOL ...enjoy your long weekend.

Welcome to First Grade!

Thank you for coming to Meet and Greet. It was wonderful to get a chance to meet each of you. Remember, Open House will be on Tuesday, August 14th at 7pm. This will be a time to discuss what your child will be doing in First Grade.
