Peter IS THE CHARACTER EDUCATION WINNER For Citizenship!!!!

Important Dates and Reminders:

1. Behavior Folders: These are sent home EVERY THURSDAY. It explains your children behavior throughout the past week. If there is nothing marked, your child is making excellent choices. If there is a minus, it is something your child and I are still working on.

2. Homework:Please read every night. Remember your child will bring home a book from their book box, it might seem "easier." This is good practice for fluency and accuracy and its a book your child picked on their own. For extra reading practice please remember raz kids! The only math packet that came home today was the math blaster math facts practice! Please send back by Dec. 17th.

3. Absent Notes:Parents please send a note, not an email. It is easier with a note because I need a hard copy to send to the office. Thank you with your help with this. Also, when your child hits 5 absences I will be calling to let you know. Please be aware. Please review the Abc's for verification!

4. Reading Bags: Your child has  been bringing home a book each night! This book will either be a "just right book" your child chose on his/her own OR a book I chose if your child had reading group that day. 9. HOLIDAY CELEBRATION: THIS WILL BE FRIDAY Dec. 18th from 9:30-10:30. Mrs. Woody will be contacting those who already said they would be willing to volunteer!

Reader's Workshop:  We will continue look at main idea. We will notice that the main idea is one or two sentences. Also, we will notice that the title and cover page gives us reader some clues about the main idea of the story!

Math Workshop:  We will review subtraction strategies. We will focus on differences from  12. Also, we will use our strategies to not only help us with our math facts but with our problem solving skills as well.

Reader's Workshop:  We will look at STORY GRAMMAR while studying the author, Ezra Jack Keats. Story grammar are more commonly referred to as story elements. These are the pieces that make up nonfiction texts: plot, characters, setting, problem/solution.

Writer's Workshop:We will be continuing with the writing process. We will be focusing on revising and editing our stories. We will continue thinking about how to bring closure to our stories without using "the end!" Also, we will peer edit using a checklist to get our stories ready for the publisher.

Math Workshop:  We will learn about shapes. We will learn about plane and solid shapes. We will notice some stack, roll and can slide.

Math Vocab: corner and vertex

Phonics:  WORD WALL WORDS: AROUND, DOWN, HE, KEEP. We will practice blends at the end of the words and study action words.

Word Work: We will be  working on s blends sc, sn, sl.

Writer's Workshop:We will be continuing with the writing process. We will be focusing on revising and editing our stories. We will continue thinking about how to bring closure to our stories without using "the end!" We will learn about meaningful, thoughtful and feeling endings.

Math Workshop:  We will begin to notice number patterns. We will practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. Also, we will focus on ordinal numbers and problem solving.

Math Vocab: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth

6.  FIRST GRADE SCARECROW DAY is OCTOBER 30th!

This is a special day for first grade students. On October 30th, all first grade students and teachers celebrate fall by participating in fall activities, games and crafts in our classrooms from 9:30-10:30 with the help of our Room Rep party planning team! (Set up may take place the night before or the morning of). More importantly, on Scarecrow Day the students come to school dressed up like SCARECROWS! It is totally up to you and your child as to how dressed up he/she wishes to be! Here are a few ideas from past students: straw or hay in/sewn on pockets, old flannel/plaid shirts, jeans with patches sewn on, overalls, straw hats, face painting to mimic a scarecrow's face, old boots, etc. Start planning!!! :)

 Next week, we'll be learning...

Reader's Workshop:  We will be thinking about how readers infer the meaning of unknown words and to help predict what is going to happen next. As readers, we must use clues in the text to help us discover new information

Writer's Workshop:We will be continuing with the writing process. We will be focusing on revising and editing our stories. We will use be thinking about how to bring closure to our stories without using "the end!"

Math Workshop:  We will continue learn about comparing numbers. We will thinking about ten more/ten less, greater than/less than and using symbols to show how numbers compare to each other. Also, we will thinking about rounding numbers to the nearest ten!

Math Vocab: rounding, nearest ten

Phonics:  WORD WALL WORDS: it, was, go, each. We will be thinking about compound words and comparative endings like, tallER and tallEST.

Word Work: We will be  working on beginning consonant sounds s, t, and the blend st.

Writer's Workshop:We will be continuing with the writing process. We will be focusing on revising and editing our stories. We will use post-it notes to add details and green/red pens to edit our stories!

Math Workshop:  We will be learning about comparing numbers. We will thinking about ten more/ten less, greater than/less than and using symbols to show how numbers compare to each other.

Math Vocab: greater than, less than, equal too,

Phonics:  WORD WALL WORDS: IN, MY, TWO, FROM, NOW.Also, we will REVIEW all short vowel sounds.

3. Absent Notes:Parents please send a note, not an email. It is easier with a note because I need a hard copy to send to the office. Thank you with your help with this.

4. Reading Bags: Your child has  been bringing home a book each night! This book will either be a "just right book" your child chose on his/her own OR a book I chose if your child had reading group that day. Please have your child practice being a fluent reader (with expression). Please return each day so your child may bring home a book the following night! We will be back to our normal reading schedule with reading groups beginning Monday!

5. Mystery Reader:Parents please check the blog, on the right side and click on the ABC's of Miss Homoelle's class if you have any questions regarding what you do. Under the letter M and Mystery Reader I explained all the expectations. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

6. Report Cards: These will come home October 17th!

7.  Picture Make-up Day will be October 14th.

8.  FIRST GRADE SCARECROW DAY is OCTOBER 30th!

This is a special day for first grade students. On October 30th, all first grade students and teachers celebrate fall by participating in fall activities, games and crafts in our classrooms from 9:30-10:30 with the help of our Room Rep party planning team! (Set up may take place the night before or the morning of). More importantly, on Scarecrow Day the students come to school dressed up like SCARECROWS! It is totally up to you and your child as to how dressed up he/she wishes to be! Here are a few ideas from past students: straw or hay in/sewn on pockets, old flannel/plaid shirts, jeans with patches sewn on, overalls, straw hats, face painting to mimic a scarecrow's face, old boots, etc. Start planning!!! :)

 Next week, we'll be learning...

Reader's Workshop:  We will be going back to discussing how readers use their schema to think about the story. We will be thinking about making text-to-text connections to help us better understand while we are reading.

Writer's Workshop:We will really zooming in our small moment stories. Then will be thinking about interesting details while thinking about a new punctuation pal, THE QUESTION MARK!

Math Workshop:  We will continue to learn about graphing! We we will learn about different types of graphs and how we should collect data!

Math Vocab: tally marks, bar graphs, picture graphs and data

Phonics:  WORD WALL WORDS: FOR, SO, LITTLE, HAVE, WHAT.Also, we will be learning about intial/final digraphs th, wh,sh,ch.

Word Work: We will be working on the short i spelling pattern. We will talk about and sort ip, ig, and ill.
