News and Notes for December 17

                                                               Holiday_cheer_md_clr
What a busy December we've had - our Social Studies unit on economics was fun-filled and we learned all about wages, goods, and supply and demand.  After the students viewed all the crafts they could work on during Winter Workshop, they filled out an application stating why they would be good employees for that particular "job".  The children were then given their assigned "jobs" and worked on them for four forty five minute sessions.  Some students went to different second grade classes, some stayed in their own class depending on their job assignment.  After all the goods were produced we learned about supply and demand and different ways to allocate goods.  The culminating activity was "market day".  The children used their wages to purchase items created by the second grade classes.  Either you have seen some of the crafts or your child is waiting to show you "when the time is right"!  It was a great hands-on educational experience for the children.  We will further our study of economics in the spring.    We've worked on telling time and counting money in math and attended a hands-on lesson about forces in motion with "Nana Nature" from our science curriculum.  In health we've learned about  medicines and drugs and how to make good choices.  Our holiday party was so much fun and the children created beautiful painted snowmen as well as snowmen made of donuts to eat!  A snowman bean bag toss and beaded snowflake project also kept the children happy!  We really have been busy this month!

We have voted on a new "Character Word of the Month" winner.  Our word for this month is compassion.  Michelle was voted the child most representing this word from our class and we are very proud of Michelle for winning this honor.

Special_md_wht Special Requests:

  • Please have your child check on any lost items in the LOST AND FOUND as unclaimed articles will be sent to charities over the winter break.
  • Please be on the lookout for new pencils, red checking pens, and erasers over the break as we are in very low supply of these items.
  • Please encourage your child to read over the break and to practice telling time and counting back change whenever the opportunity arises. ***Reading calendars will be due January 5.
  • Please look for the flyer pertaining to CRCT practice in your child's behavior folder today.  It contains the number you will need in order to log in and take advantage of the practice test questions available.  I encourage you to visit this site as it allows your child the opportunity to practice and determine areas that may need reinforcemtent for this very important assessment.

Thank you all again for a wonderful holiday party and for all the generous and thoughtful gifts and gift cards.  I sincerely appreciate your generosity.  I hope you all have a relaxing and safe winter break and cherish the time with those you love most.  I will miss your children, but do look forward to some extra time with my own children.  Take care and as always, thanks for sharing your children with me.

News and Notes for the Week of October 22, 2009

           Fireman_using_fire_extinguisher_md_clr                                             Dalmatian_hat_md_clr

Our lesson from Cobb County Firefighter Steve was a valuable and informative one.  We learned how to find a door in the event of a fire, how important it is to have a meeting place for our family should we ever have a fire at home, and how there is nothing inside a burning house that we should go back inside for.  We are looking forward to our field trip to FIRE SAFETY VILLAGE next Tuesday.

Please remember:

  • No skirts or dresses.
  • Tennis shoes and class T-Shirt should be worn.
  • If you are bringing lunch from home, please bring it in a disposable container and include a drink with your child's name clearly written on both.
  • to send in Fire Safety homework if you have not already turned it in.
Math_md_clr

We are busy learning about subtraction with regrouping and will be practicing this second grade standard throughout this nine weeks.  Please continue to review money at home.

Geometrical_solids_md_clr

Second grade is very excited to have been awarded a grant from the Mt. Bethel Foundation.  Each of the second grade classes will be ordering twelve hardcover children's thesauruses. These books will be used to expand the children's word choice and vocabulary in their written expression across the curriculum.  In addition, we have purchased HOT DOTS and pens, an interactive activity providing individual reinforcement of second grade math and language arts skills. HOT DOTS enable the children to work independently on skills while classmates are participating in small group instruction. 3-D geometric shapes will also be purchased to enhance instruction of our geometry standards.  This grant is just one example of how the Foundation supports the education of Mt. Bethel students and helps teachers make instruction more effective.

    Classroom News August 20, 2009

Fall_school_notebook_apple_sway_md_clr What a wonderful first week of school we had!  This second week is proving just as great as your students are learning our new 1-2-3 line procedure and our classroom routines and schedule.  We're off to a great start and I appreciate everyone's effort in making this such a  smooth beginning to the year.  Your children have made many new friends and the classroom is beginning to truly feel like a "family".

    Curriculum Notes:

    Math:

The children are learning about Venn diagrams, tally charts, and place value.  Please download the math parent letter for a more comprehensive list of math skills and concepts we are covering this nine weeks.  You will also find suggested activities for reinforcing these skills at home: Download Math parent letter

    Reading -

All students took their STAR test in computer lab Wednesday.  I have included a parent letter informing you of your child's AR level in this week's behavior folder. Please note that the children are required to take at least one AR test on their level and pass the test with a score of 80% or higher each week.  If your child is reading chapter books, I have discussed the need to check out a "start to finish" book as well as the chapter book.  This will allow your child to read a chapter book at his/her own pace, while still meeting the one test per week requirement.  I would appreciate your help in reminding the children that these tests need to be taken by Friday of each week.  I would also appreciate your help in assuring the children are indeed checking out books on their level - I try to check while we are in the media center, but with 22 students I can't promise I look at each and every book.  Please encourage your child to bring the "start to finish" book home and check the spine to make sure it is on the AR level noted on your parent letter.  If there is no picture of a red book with a level underneath, the book is not an AR book and cannot be tested on.

****We are now scheduled to go to the media center every Monday from 1:30 - 2:00.  The children will be able to check out books beginning August 31.  The AR requirement of reading/testing on at least one book per week will begin that week....so everyone should have tested successfully on an appropriately leveled AR book by September 4.

We have shared folktales this week and have enjoyed learning about the trickster ANANSI.

    Special Thanks to:
