WEEK OF DECEMBER 14 - DECEMBER 18

Birthday_cake animated

Dear Parents and class,

Thank you for sending the beautiful cards and goodies on my birthday. The cards were truly treasures and your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Glue bottle animated Thank you to Zachary and Guillermo's moms for watching the class while I attended my  grade level planning this week. Thank you to Christopher's mom for the wonderful art lesson on mosaics.

Spaghetti and meatballs animatedI also want to thank Olivia's dad and Lili's mom for watching the class while I attended the staff holiday luncheon. It is a very special get together for the Mt. Bethel faculty.

Spotlight animated Congratulations to Maddie who has been chosen as our December character education winner. Maddie was chosen for being a "compassionate" person.

Clapping hands animation We have been very busy with review and assessment pieces, this week, as our 9 week report period is coming to an end. We participated in High Touch, High Tech, spent some time with our book buddies and are looking forward to our Winter Celebration.  The children have been very focused and well behaved in light of all of the excitement.

Robot animateI will not be sending home communication folders or weekly papers. Please hold on to Reading Logs, Math Blaster folders and Fun Calendars until we return in January.  The space creatures  have landed and they look great.  The children were very proud of their creations.

Happy new year 3 I want to wish each of you a wonderful, restful, enjoyable break.  I know I am excited as my entire family will be arriving at my door next week.   Happy, Healthy New Year to you and your families.  I look forward to seeing everyone in 2010.   The children are bringing a little gift home from me.   It is a game of strategy called Tapatan and I hope they will teach it to you and enjoy playing it during their vacation.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 7 - DECEMBER 11

Senteo animatedIn Math, we have been using directional words such as, to the left of, beside, below and near, to locate and describe the location of objects. We have also been reviewing the vast amount of concepts covered this nine week report period. We have used our Senteo hand-held response system to assess our knowledge.

Books animated  In Reader's Workshop, we read the story Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs.  We reviewed the importance of gathering information from the front and back covers of a book and the illustrations inside. We located proper nouns, compound words and learned about quotation marks around dialogue. The children  also learned that an author may include an "afterword" at the end of a book to tell you something special which helps the reader better understand the story. In Reader's Workshop, we were also introduced to the wonderful author, illustrator Jan Brett. We visited her web site: www.janbrett.com. We will use many of her books to reinforce the study of character, setting, problem, solution, main idea and making connections. Her website is a great resource for the children.

Animated letters  In Phonics, we learned that the vowel o says its name at the end of a syllable in words like so and hello, and in words with an o-e spelling pattern such as stove and home. We were also introduced to the consonant blends cr as in crop, cl as in clip, fr as in frame, gl as in glad and gr as in grill. The children completed a picture sort with these blends and drew pictures to match.

Dancing pencil animated In Writer's Workshop, we have been learning how to write an acrostic. The children wrote and typed a special one as part of a gift to their wonderful parents.

Earth animated3 The holiday doors were a huge success. The children loved being able to share their customs and traditions with friends. It was fun to learn about the different ways in which our class  celebrate their holidays. The doors are hung in the hall outside of our classroom for all to enjoy! We visited the Cultural Celebration exhibit in the Media Center. We learned about many more holidays enjoyed by families from Mt. Bethel and around the world. I hope you have a chance to visit the wonderful exhibit and see our special holiday doors.

Magnet animated Next Thursday, the children will attend the in school High Touch, High Tech field trip on sound. They will be participating  in various hands-on interactive stations. If you have not returned your child's permission and activity fee, please do so as soon as possible.

Pizza animated Just a reminder that Papa John Pizza fund-raiser is this evening.

Dollar animated Tomorrow is the last day to send contributions for the Caring and Sharing collection. We really appreciate our lunch and custodial staff and our clinic nurse. Thank you for your generous donations.

Snowman animatedThank you, in advance, to Rachel's mom for planning what I am sure will be a fun-filled winter celebration.  Many thanks to all of the parents who volunteered their time and help as well.  I look forward to seeing you, if possible, next Friday, December 18th from 9:30-10:30.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 4

Door_animate_2 It is hard to believe that December is upon us but evidence was sent home this week in the form of our holiday door project.  This project is a special first grade holiday tradition.  I cannot wait to see the finished doors and to get a peek at the inside of your homes.  The children may complete these doors using any materials they desire.  Please take time to help them brainstorm your traditions to share in their writings.  They will present their door and read their story aloud in class.  Please have them practice reading what they have written to help with fluency.

Geometric shapes animated In math, this week, we began work on our geometry chapter. The children heard several stories such as: The Shape of Things and The Greedy Triangle.  We have learned about plane shapes, solid figures, corners and flat surfaces. The children created a "shape buddy"  in class. In today's papers, there is a homework project which involves creating a Space-Shape Creature from found geometric shapes. Mt. Bethel is always working on becoming a green school and this project will certainly compliment recycling. The space creatures are due at school Monday, December 14. Please do not send these sooner as storage space is limited.

Girl reading animated In Reader's Workshop, we were introduced to literacy devices, such as figurative language and idioms that provided clues to the meaning of poems that we read. We also reviewed adjectives.

Animated letters  In Phonics, the children were introduced to the long vowel sounds of a and i in words with (a-e) and (i-e) spelling patterns, such as, name and hide. We learned that the e stays silent and makes the vowel say its name. We also worked on the consonant blends, pl as in plant, sl as in sled, bl as in black and fl as in flag.

Turkey animated 2In Writer's Workshop, the children have been busy sharing small moments from their Thanksgiving holiday. They are working hard on editing, capitalization and punctuation.

Reports animated  Thank you for returning reading logs (the minutes read were amazing), math blaster papers and fun family calendars. Please continue to practice math facts and to encourage your child to use the strategies we have learned and use in class. This will help them to become much more fluent. Our new Accelerated Reader program is up and running and the children have acclimated quickly. In January, you will receive a letter explaining how to look for book tests on line and how to check your child's test scores from home. I am sending the results of November's AR tests in today's folders. Your child should be taking at least one test per week.

Dollar_animatedMt. Bethel has caring and sharing in the month of December.  Information is coming home in the children's folders today. For the holidays, staff, teachers and students have the opportunity to recognize some of the truly special people at school who help us all;  the custodians, lunchroom staff, and clinic nurse.  If you would like to contribute, please send in a heartfelt cash donation by December 11th.  No amount is too great or too small!

Snow_falling_animatedPlease don't forget Friday, December 18th.  We will be having a winter celebration similar to our Scarecrow celebration.  The children will be engaged in special centers from 9:30-10:30 and all parents are welcome to come and share in the fun.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 16 - NOVEMBER 20

Cards animated  In Math, we have completed our review of addition and subtraction strategies to 12. The children learned a card game great for 3 players.  It is called "Read Your Mind" and it is an enjoyable way to practice computation facts.  You need a deck of playing cards without the face cards. Two players face each other and each one draws a card. The players do not look at the card they have drawn. Instead they hold the card up to their forehead.  The third player calls out the sum or difference of the two cards on their foreheads. Each player holding a card tries to name the card that he or she is holding. The first person to say the correct number gets both cards. After all cards have been used, the one with the most cards becomes the caller.  This is a great family game. In class, we always apply our knowledge to word problems and interpreting graphs. We are taking a closer look at key words used in math word problems. Words like in all, altogether, and in total are clues that we will be using addition to solve a word problem. Words like how many fewer, how many were left and how many more are clues that we will be using subtraction to solve a word problem.

Whistle animated In Reader's Workshop, this week, we read Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats. We explored parts of a story including character, setting, relationships between characters, identifying problem and solution, understanding the main character's relationship to the plot and cause and effect. We reviewed action words which are words that often describe things people do, acted out action words and  found  action words throughout the story.

Crayon_hopping_green_animatedIn Phonics, we worked with the consonant blends sc as in school, sn as in snake and sw as in swing. The children completed a picture sort and drew pictures of words with these blends.

Spotlight animated  Congratulations to Rachel who was chosen by her classmates as the November character education winner. Rachel won for displaying good "citizenship."

Look animatedPlease check your child's behavior folder each week and be sure to initial the bottom of the page. Listening with eyes and ears during instructional time is always important and especially as our curriculum becomes more difficult and our directions become more multi-stepped.  Inattentiveness during instructional time leads to confusion and missed learning. Check your child's weekly papers for comments reflective of difficulties in this area. Play-dates and holidays are exciting, but we do have a tremendous amount of work to cover and sleep and focus are extremely important.

Pilgrim_children_animatedIn Writer's Workshop, we read some informational books about Pilgrim children and wrote informational stories about how hard our lives would have been as Pilgrim girls and boys.  We used a format called Power Writing.  Power Writing is a tool for helping the students focus, support, elaborate and organize their writing.  At this time, it involves writing a five sentence paragraph. The paragraph includes an opening and closing sentence with three supporting details in the body of the story.  We continue to work on our editing skills focusing on capitalization, punctuation and using various resources such as our word wall and Quick Word book to correct spelling.

Clapping hands animationThe extra credit reports and experiments were excellent! The children were proud to present them and the class was truly engaged during the presentations.

Turkey in oven animated  As you know, we have been working on writing descriptive personal narratives in our Writing Workshop.  We are learning to zoom in on special moments and expound upon them.  We will be writing a piece on our Thanksgiving vacation when we return.  Please take time to discuss with your children their favorite moments from your holiday week.  It may be Thanksgiving dinner or a special place they went with you or someone from their family.  We will try to write about this time using descriptive language.  Talk about what they saw, smelled, felt etc.   I want to take the time now to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.   Enjoy this  time with your children.  I know that I am looking forward to spending special time with mine.  I can't wait to hear and read about your special family times. Happy Thanksgiving and I will see you back here on the blog Thursday December 3rd!!!

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 9 - NOVEMBER 13

Crayon box animatedIn Math, we have worked on ordinal numbers and a review of  addition strategies.   Aside from the strategies we have been using, the children learned a strategy for addition problems containing the number 9. In a problem such as 9+6, it is easier to round the 9 up to a 10 and the 6 down to a 5 and think of the sum for 10+5. We have been having a competition with flash cards. Instead of giving the sum, the first child to respond with the strategy they would use to solve the problem wins. We also read the book More Than One and discussed  how one can mean more than one.  We realized that one pair of shoes means more than one shoe, one baseball team  really has 9 players and one family can mean many different things.  The children then drew self -portraits and labeled parts where one meant more than one, such as one mouth but many teeth. Their wonderful portraits are on display outside  our classroom.

Hen animated  In Reader's Workshop, we read an adaptation of the folktale The Little Red Hen, called The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. We focused on story elements such as major and minor characters, primary and secondary settings and problems and solutions. We read several other versions of this story and compared and contrasted characters, settings, problems and resolutions.

Skate animatedIn Phonics, we worked on the beginning consonants s and t, and several consonant blends such as st as in stamp, sp as in spill, sk as in skate and sm as in smell. The children completed word sorts with these sounds and drew pictures to match.

Pencil animated In Writer's Workshop, we worked on proper nouns and reviewed that these special names and titles should always be capitalized. We also explored patterns in books and created some class pattern sentences.

Computer_mouse_animatedWe visited the computer lab this week and used the program Graph Club to create circle, bar and table graphs to reflect the data from our previous graphing project.

Pizza animated Just a reminder that Papa John Pizza fund-raiser is this evening. We loved our pizza party last Friday.

Boy_with_backpack_animatedPlease remember that our library day is on Friday.  The children should return their books otherwise they are unable to check out a new book and their library time is not as productive as it should be.  They are able to keep books for a two- week period, however, if they have finished their books please return them so that they are able to select a new book to read.  All children should be taking an Accelerated Reader test each week.  In addition to reading AR books at home, the children are also reading Accelerated Reader books at school.  We are undergoing a huge AR change and the children will not be able to take AR tests the remainder of this week through next Wednesday. Due to our fabulous foundation and a grant to the media center, almost 80% of all of our library books will have an AR test in the very near future. The AR conversion of data will be taking place this next week. More information will be forthcoming.

Thank you animatedThank you to Olivia's dad and Lily's mom for watching the class while I attended grade level planning. This time is invaluable to our team.

Snowman_animatedSave the date on Friday, December 18th.  We will be having our winter holiday celebration and all parents are welcome to join us.  More information will follow.  We will have a rotation similar to Scarecrow Day, from 9:30 - 10:30.  Thank you in advance to our wonderful room parents and volunteers who will be planning this  special morning.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 2 - NOVEMBER 6

Animated_quarterWe are almost  finished with Chapter 10 in math.  This chapter focused on odd and even numbers, missing numbers, skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's, problem solving and patterns on a hundreds chart. As you know, the children are assessed each nine weeks on money.  We have always written the day's date in coins and trade money as part of our calendar.   We have also started buying words.  In your child's folder, today, I am sending a sheet called A Word's Worth . A monetary value is assigned to each letter of the alphabet.  It would be a valuable practice if your child could buy a word or two each night.  They will need several pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. You can select the word, or they can find a word in a book.  The important piece is that they arrange the coins in ascending value to practice the concept of counting on.  For example, if the word ball has a nickel for B, a penny for A and a quarter for L, your child would arrange the coins quarter, quarter, nickel, penny and count 25 + 25 + 5+ 1 = 56 cents.  This coincides with the skip counting we have worked on in Chapter 10, and gives valuable practice with coins. Please don't forget math blaster folders. The children should be taking one addition and one subtraction timed test each week.

Thinking animated In Reader's Workshop, we have begun to learn about inferring. When a reader infers he/she uses prior knowledge and textual clues to draw conclusions and form interpretations of text. We read the stories Dreams  and Chicken Sunday and learned strategies to determine the meaning of unknown words and how to make sense of text.  We can use our schema (prior knowledge), picture clues, reread , use textual clues, think really hard about what we are reading,  and engage in group conversations to infer what unfamiliar words and story parts may mean. The children are working on applying these strategies to independent reading time if and when they come across an unknown word or unclear story event. We also worked on comparative words using the er and est ending in words, such as big, bigger, biggest. We continue to work on story sequence by retelling the beginning, middle and endings of stories we are reading.

Animated letters  In Phonics, this week, we identified and reviewed the consonant digraphs sh, ch, wh and th. The children sorted pictures beginning with these digraphs and drew pictures to go along with these sounds.

Paintbrush_animatedIn Writer's Workshop, we are continuing to explore adjectives. We are learning that we can create more vivid and interesting stories like the ones we are reading and paint images by using juicy color words and descriptive language. We also edit our work for correct capitalization and punctuation.

Smoke_alarm_animatedIn Science, we are starting our study of sound and in Social Studies we are learning about Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea.

Eekk animated  Last Friday, we had the opportunity to meet our fourth grade book buddies from Mrs. Bush's class. The children worked on a getting to know you "friend diagram" which is similar to a Venn Diagram. After much conversation, they charted their similarities and differences. They truly enjoyed this getting to know you activity. Instant bonds were formed!

Pizza animatedFriday, we will celebrate with our Papa John's pizza party. We will be having a very early, 9:24 lunch time due to a school wide afternoon track dedication ceremony. The children usually save their snacks on early schedule days for the afternoon. In lieu of snacks, the children will have pizza at noon. Speaking of snacks, we are out of extra snacks. Please help your child to remember to pack a snack. Donations of extra snacks are appreciated. Please always remember, we are a NUT FREE classroom.

Spa animatedI am so excited! I just found out that I will receive a spa gift certificate due to our class participation in the Foundation fund-raiser! Thank you, as always, for your continued support! You're children are very fortunate to have  such involved, caring parents!!!

Fun_run_animatedGood luck to everyone participating in the Fun Run this weekend!!!

WEEK OF OCTOBER 26 - OCTOBER 30

Bus animatedOur field trip to the Fox was wonderful. The children were incredibly well behaved. The performance was outstanding and went along perfectly with our narrative writing unit. Thank you to Rachel's mom for being our chaperon.

Rocket animatedIn math, this week, we were looking at a hundreds chart to understand the positional value of the placement of the numbers. We also worked on counting forwards and backwards, ordinal numbers and rounding numbers to the nearest tenth.  We did many partner activities to reinforce these concepts.

Math  packets are blasting home today to strengthen our home school connection in the area of math computation. Please read the parent letter that is inside your child's folder. We have learned many strategies we use daily in the classroom. The children should be applying these strategies as they test. Please return the packet the last school day of the month.

Monster animated In Reader's Workshop,  we used the book Jamberry to illustrate compound words and rhyme. We also worked on using pictures to predict story words, how to figure out the meaning of unknown words and a review of short vowels. We read a wonderful book, The Monster Who Ate My Peas. We used this book to tie in many of the strategies good readers use to gain meaning from text. We also wrote about a fear we have had that we perceived to be worse than it was in reality.

Animated letters In Phonics, we worked on the th and wh digraphs. We sorted pictures and drew illustrations of things starting with these sounds, such as thumb and whistle.

Scarecrow animated In Writer's Workshop, we brainstormed juicy color words and dressed scarecrows in colorful outfits. Instead of plain blue overalls, some children colored blue denim overalls and instead of an orange shirt, they may have colored it pumpkin orange. We made sure our illustrations matched our juicy descriptions.

Rain animated 1Today the children were treated to an informative, educational visit from the 11 Alive weather van. We're hoping for a rain free Halloween!

Red_ribbon_animated2This week was Red Ribbon week.  The children were provided a drug free bracelet from the PTA to wear throughout the week.  The bracelet had the slogan "Don't Monkey Around With Drugs"

Spotlight animatedCongratulations to Carmen for being selected as our October character education winner. Carmen was chosen for displaying "responsibility." Way to go Carmen!

Ticket_animatedPlease return tallied Reading Logs and Fun Family Calendars tomorrow.  The children do get tickets for their hard work.  I will send home a new log and calendar.  Continue to read at least 15 minutes per night. The children really do enjoy Raz-Kids. Please continue to use this site at home. It does count for nightly reading. Please help your child remember to return his/her library books.

Sound_animatedStarting this month, I am going to give the children an opportunity to take part in an optional report. This opportunity is intended to enhance learning and curiosity and by no means is it intended to add stress to your lives. If interested, your child may do a report on any of the following science and social studies topics we will be covering:  magnets, sound, Thomas Jefferson, Sacagawea and Lewis and Clark. The report should fit your child's learning style. Traditional reports, posters or any other presentation format is welcome. We look forward to learning more together. Reports will be due on Wednesday, November 18th.

Star animatedI will be sending AR test results and new STAR levels home on Friday. This will give the children another two days to take tests.

Camera animated I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Scarecrow Day tomorrow.  A big thank you to Jake's mom for organizing this event. Don't forget your cameras.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 19 - OCTOBER 23

Equal_sign_animatedIn Math, we have been working on comparing numbers.  We are using the greater than, less than and equal to signs. We are also exploring numbers that are before, after or between other numbers.  Please be sure to look over your child's weekly papers to see if additional review is necessary.

Mind animatedIn Reader's Workshop, we are activating our background knowledge about a topic so we are able to connect to and better understand what we read.  We do this by exploring the cover of a book to determine the genre, to predict vocabulary we might encounter and to think about how prior knowledge may help in our understanding. We worked on the l blends in words like pl as in plant, fl as in flow, bl as in blue and ld as in cold. We also worked on the importance of positional words such as beside, near, around and middle.

Abc animated  In Phonics, we worked on the consonant digraphs ch as in chip, and sh as in ship. The children completed a word sort with these digraphs and drew pictures of things that begin with ch and sh.

Paint animatedIn Writer's Workshop, we are starting to explore adjectives. We are learning that we can create more vivid and interesting stories like the ones we are reading and paint images by using juicy color words and descriptive language. We read the book Fancy Nancy.  Nancy likes to get fancy with the clothes she wears and the words she uses.  She uses words like fuchsia instead of purple and stupendous in place of great. We looked at some of our personal narratives on the Elmo and brainstormed juicy adjectives to make our writing more interesting.

Storyteller_animatedOur Mt. Bethel book fair will run next week.  Your children will go for a preview today.  Don't forget to stop and shop.  The media center looks amazing!

Star_animatedThe children took a new Star test for the accelerated reader program. They have shown tremendous growth and now have new reading ranges for their book boxes and library books. I will send their new reading ranges home next week.

T-shirts animated  Please remember, this Monday, October 26th is our field trip to the fabulous Fox Theater to see Junie B. Jones. The children are to wear their class t-shirts. We will be eating lunch upon our return to school. Since our lunchtime will be later than usual, please send your child with a large snack. I am sending a note in today's paper reminding you of your child's lunch choice.

Scarecrow_animatedI want to remind everyone of our upcoming Scarecrow Day.  Parents are invited to attend our special center time from 9:30-10:30 on Friday, October 30th.  The children are encouraged to come to school dressed as scarecrows.  Some costume ideas are overalls, jeans, straw hats, flannel shirts, etc. Thank you again to all parents helping with this special day.

Thank you animated Thank you for your continued support of the Mt. Bethel Foundation. I am so appreciative of the past and present grants that I have received. First grade recently received consumable handwriting books to go along with our new Zaner Bloser writing program and CRCT practice books. Thank you to Abby's mom for coordinating this fundraiser for our class.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 12 - OCTOBER 16

Graphs_animated_2In math, we have started a unit on graphing. We are learning that we can record data using tally marks. We are also learning to represent and interpret this data in different types of graphs such as bar and picture graphs. The children started to work on a partner graphing project. The partners have formulated questions, collected data by polling classmates and tallied their responses.

Filing_cabinet_animatedDuring our Reading Workshop time, we have been discussing schema.  Schema is another word for thinking about what you already know. Therefore, using your schema, is using your background knowledge.  It is like a filing cabinet in your brain, filled with the places you have been, things you have done, and the experiences that make us who we are as individuals.  Using our schema helps us to better understand the books we are reading.  We, therefore, make connections from our reading.  We will be working on different types of connections. This week, I introduced connecting our reading to ourselves.  This connection is called a text-to-self connection.  We read many books, such as Wibble Wobble, that illustrated this concept and shared connections we made to our lives during the reading.  We also worked on text to text connections comparing books like Arthur's First Sleepover, to Ira Sleeps Over. We will also be connecting texts we read to the world. During your reading time at home, encourage your child to make these personal connections, if they apply.

Animated letters  In Phonics, we sorted the word families ip as in rip and flip, ig as in pig and twig and ill as in mill and chill. We also worked on the initial and final consonant digraphs th, wh, sh and ch.

Magnet_animatedIn Science, the children will be exploring magnets these next few weeks and, in Social Studies, we have begun to learn about another American hero, Thomas Jefferson.

Airplane_animatedIn Writer's Workshop, we started to brainstorm topics for  personal narratives. Personal narratives can be written about anything that happens in our lives. We looked at the wordless book Zoom as an illustration of how to "zoom" into one particular moment in time so that our writing is more focused.   We reviewed asking and telling sentences and ending punctuation and descriptive words. We will continue, as always, to incorporate the mechanics of writing into our personal narratives.

Crayon_coloring animate I want to thank Lucy and Zachary's moms for watching the class on Tuesday during my grade level planning time. I also want to thank Guillermo's mom for a wonderful art activity.

Report_card_envelope_animatedReport cards are coming home tomorrow. Please keep the report card but be sure to return the signed signature card in the unsealed envelope. Thank you.

Pizza animated  Our class had the largest participation at Papa John's last week. We have earned a future class pizza party!!!!

Remember animatedNext Wednesday, October 21st, is an early release day with a 12:20 dismissal.
