We are almost finished with Chapter 10 in math. This chapter focused on odd and even numbers, missing numbers, skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's, problem solving and patterns on a hundreds chart. As you know, the children are assessed each nine weeks on money. We have always written the day's date in coins and trade money as part of our calendar. We have also started buying words. In your child's folder, today, I am sending a sheet called A Word's Worth . A monetary value is assigned to each letter of the alphabet. It would be a valuable practice if your child could buy a word or two each night. They will need several pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. You can select the word, or they can find a word in a book. The important piece is that they arrange the coins in ascending value to practice the concept of counting on. For example, if the word ball has a nickel for B, a penny for A and a quarter for L, your child would arrange the coins quarter, quarter, nickel, penny and count 25 + 25 + 5+ 1 = 56 cents. This coincides with the skip counting we have worked on in Chapter 10, and gives valuable practice with coins. Please don't forget math blaster folders. The children should be taking one addition and one subtraction timed test each week.
In Reader's Workshop, we have begun to learn about inferring. When a reader infers he/she uses prior knowledge and textual clues to draw conclusions and form interpretations of text. We read the stories Dreams and Chicken Sunday and learned strategies to determine the meaning of unknown words and how to make sense of text. We can use our schema (prior knowledge), picture clues, reread , use textual clues, think really hard about what we are reading, and engage in group conversations to infer what unfamiliar words and story parts may mean. The children are working on applying these strategies to independent reading time if and when they come across an unknown word or unclear story event. We also worked on comparative words using the er and est ending in words, such as big, bigger, biggest. We continue to work on story sequence by retelling the beginning, middle and endings of stories we are reading.
In Phonics, this week, we identified and reviewed the consonant digraphs sh, ch, wh and th. The children sorted pictures beginning with these digraphs and drew pictures to go along with these sounds.
In Writer's Workshop, we are continuing to explore adjectives. We are learning that we can create more vivid and interesting stories like the ones we are reading and paint images by using juicy color words and descriptive language. We also edit our work for correct capitalization and punctuation.
In Science, we are starting our study of sound and in Social Studies we are learning about Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea.
Last Friday, we had the opportunity to meet our fourth grade book buddies from Mrs. Bush's class. The children worked on a getting to know you "friend diagram" which is similar to a Venn Diagram. After much conversation, they charted their similarities and differences. They truly enjoyed this getting to know you activity. Instant bonds were formed!
Friday, we will celebrate with our Papa John's pizza party. We will be having a very early, 9:24 lunch time due to a school wide afternoon track dedication ceremony. The children usually save their snacks on early schedule days for the afternoon. In lieu of snacks, the children will have pizza at noon. Speaking of snacks, we are out of extra snacks. Please help your child to remember to pack a snack. Donations of extra snacks are appreciated. Please always remember, we are a NUT FREE classroom.
I am so excited! I just found out that I will receive a spa gift certificate due to our class participation in the Foundation fund-raiser! Thank you, as always, for your continued support! You're children are very fortunate to have such involved, caring parents!!!
Good luck to everyone participating in the Fun Run this weekend!!!
