Document Cameras-Complements to 21st Century Technology (Model TT-02 by ELMO)

Elmo_2 Todays Learners Thrive with ELMO in the Classroom By Leigh Carter  With all the pictures, graphics and electronic images our society is inundated with these days, we've all become visual learners, at least to some degree.  Modern day classrooms are not complete without a document camera, or as ELMO likes to call them, a visual presenter.  Click here to read more of this article...

Excerpt taken from "New Century Schoolhouse" a publication by the Organization for Educational Technology & Curriculum.Elmo_tt02s

A Document Camera uses a high-resolution video camera to display three dimensional objects instantly. For example, while the teacher is reading a book, the document camera can project a large image of the text on the SmartBoard screen. Many types of objects can be displayed such as math manipulatives, student work and science material. Document cameras are a perfect tool for demonstrations and experiments. They will work with the new 21st century technology installed in the classrooms.

TEACHER GRANTS THROUGH THE YEARS...

Target/ALP students will get a taste of the latest in interactive technology with the SmartBoard. The touch-sensitive SmartBoard displays are connected to a computer and digital projector to show a computer image. Simply by touching the large display, students can access and control any computer application or multimedia platform, including the Internet, CD-ROMs and DVDs. With SMART Board software, students and teachers can write over applications in digital ink and then edit, save, and print.  The SmartBoard is an interactive tool that helps students brainstorm and think visually. It sparks creativity! Smart Ideas, the concept-mapping software that is included with the SmartBoard, gives students the power to turn abstract ideas into easily understood visual maps and organize thoughts and images into roadmaps for learning.

Kindergarten and Plants!

Kindergarten teachers Kristine Barkley and B.J. Stevens will help students build an understanding of the process of living plants as they progress from seed - to young plant - to mature plant through a hands-on learning program called “The Life Cycle of a Plant.

Making Words in EIP!

EIP teacher Stacye Fogel is on the go this year traveling to eight classes a day!
Through a program entitled “Making Words,” she will carry a portable, magnetic pocket chart that allows students to make words with new magnetic letters. The vowels are red and the consonants are blue allowing the students to manipulate the letters to form words and sentences. This is an
essential skill for good readers and writers. The students enjoy these activities while strengthening their decoding skills....... one word at a time.

Second Grade Jumps for Frog Games!

Students in Paula Boland’s and Mary Alice George’s 2nd grade classes will be learning and having fun at the same time.  “Frog Games” enrich and reinforce reading, language arts, and math skills and review 25 of the most important skills.Students do not realize how many different skills they are reinforcing as they play these hands-on learning games. In addition, confidence in their learning abilities is increased. Later in the year when students bring these games home, parents can enjoy observing their children practice and learn these important curriculum
based math and literacy skills and be actively engaged in the activity with their child.

Published Authors in Fifth Grade!

Eileen Jedlicka’s 5th grade class will be published authors with the help of a Foundation grant.  She begins the assignment with a group discussion to develop common ideas resulting in a commonly held theme. Emerging from active participation by all the students, a book is created reflecting their individual experiences, yet adhering to a single theme. The final chapters showcase the common bond students have created through this writing exercise. The students sit in thought production circles--on the floor of the classroom--contributing words, phrases, paragraphs--in short, they finish the book. The students illustrate their individual chapters by their own hands. The books are professionally bound and titled and then distributed to the students and their guests at a festive and meaningful book-signing ceremony at Borders Book Stores, a Mt. Bethel Partner in Education.

Remote Controls and Power Point for Fifth Graders!

In the 2005-2006 school year,

Jessica Appleyard took her 5th grade class to new technological heights with “Beyond Question” software that works in conjunction with any publishing software and allows the teacher to create computer-based quizzes and questions and immediately gain student feedback in front of the classroom.  For example, the teacher remote allows the teacher to navigate a PowerPoint presentation with embedded multiple choice questions.  Students key in their answer to the remote and the program will immediately graph the percent correct in the class. It will also allow the teacher to track individual students’ accuracy.  Kids love it because they love having the remote controls and it allows each student to answer anonymously.  “Beyond Question” also forces those kids who may have a tendency to sit back and wait for others to answer to participate and it allows the teacher to see who is struggling and who needs extra support.

Appleyard’s students created a PowerPoint presentation in science about kinetic and potential energy and then quizzed their classmates with the remotes.  They also created a survey for their book buddies which was a great collaborative effort because the fifth graders were able to help their kindergarten buddies in Arleen Taffel’s class learn how to interpret graphs. All of this was funded by a grant from the Mt. Bethel Elementary School Foundation.
