We will begin checking out ONE BOOK each Thursday morning from 8-8:30. As our responsibility develops, we will transition to TWO BOOKS each week. Stay tuned. Please remind your child to place his/her library book back into his/her backpack after each read so it will always be available and ready for our classroom check-out time.
7. RAZ-KIDS.COM: Has your child checked out this fun and interactive reading website? If not, please see the handout that was sent home last week detailing this activity! If you forgot your child's log-in or password, please email me. Each week, I log in and take a peek at the books your child is reading and enjoying at home! This is a fun and engaging way to develop a lifetime love for reading and books!
8. Accelerated Reader Program (AR): Wondering if your child will have an opportunity to begin this challenging and goal-setting reading program this year with the books you have at home and all of the books here in our Media Center? The answer is YES!!! We are taking things one step at a time...stay tuned for a parent letter detailing the AR program next month! All of your questions will most likely be answered at the time you receive my parent info letter! Thank you!
9. CogAT Testing: LETTER COMING HOME TODAY. September 9, 10, and 11. Please be sure your child is well-rested, fed, and to school on time. We will begin testing first thing!
10. Behavior Folders: These are RED and sent home EVERY THURSDAY. The insert explains your children behavior throughout the past week. If there is nothing marked, your child made excellent choices. If there is a minus in an area, your child is working with me to make better choices.
We are Learning:
1. Reader's Workshop/LA: We are hard at work laying the foundation for our Reader's Workshop! Next week we will talk about the strategies we can use when we get to a word we do not know!!! Each day, we will discuss 1 or 2 strategies- a list will go home for your at-home use and reference. We are continuing to develop the skill of choosing a "just right" book from our classroom library. As good readers, we know we choose books we can read- never books that are too tricky because we could become frustrated and discouraged. Good reading and fluency (automaticity/pace/expression) comes with reading familiar books/words OVER AND OVER! :)
2. Writer's Workshop: We will continue to develop our "Writer's Rules" again this week. So far, we have discussed that writers write each day, write about what we know best- ourselves, we take care not to disturb others' writing time, we never erase, we use special workshop writing tools, and always date our pieces for future reference. We are still sharing Memory Bags and enjoying the treasures inside each child's bag! We will continue to work on planning and drafting new stories- as always, we write about things that have happened to us! A great way to encourage your young writer at home is to remind them to tuck their memories away for writing time by saying: "Oh, I think (this) would be a great thing to write about tomorrow!"
3. Math Workshop: Concepts of subtraction. We will explore the terms: "take-away", "subtraction sentence", "minus", and "difference." We will discuss drawing pictures to help our thinking while we write subtraction sentences and practice the concept of "taking away".
4. Phonics/Grammar: short 0, onsets and rimes of words (map= m (onset), ap (rime))
5. Word Wall Words: for, my, at, friend
6. Science/SS: Map Skills
Special Thanks:
