Reading: This week our unit is titled, “Making Connections.” We will study the book, “My Grandmother’s Patchwork Quilt,” and study the Narrative Fiction genre of literature. Our vocabulary words from the story will be: record – something that is used to keep track of past events, and special – wonderful or unusual. We will also review compound words, study point of view, practice chunking (a decoding strategy), and identify the facts and events.
Language Arts: Students will learn to identify the various spellings of the final /k/ sound. Students will also read, sort, and write words with the final /k/ sound spelled –ck, -ke, or –k. Each week we will read a poem whose words emphasize the learned sounds. This week’s poem is titled, “Jake Bakes.” Words we will study this week include: pack, sock, lick, truck, lock, duck, smoke, woke, bake, like, rake, bike, look, crook, hook, book, cook and brook. Challenge words are: stack, brick, quack, pluck, brake, quake, flake, spike, shook, took and nook.
Writing: This week we will begin a new unit on Responding to Reading. We will continue to study the VOICE trait of a good writer. Students will review some previous read alouds (Dear Mt. Blueberry and My Grandmother’s Quilt) to generate memories on the types of letters they have written. Students will also learn about the parts of a letter and practice writing their own letter to an author.
Math: This week we will close our first math unit and review any missed concepts. We will also introduce our second math unit and begin some pre-assessments.
